The Jewish Internet Defense Force (JIDF)-led Twitter campaign to raise awareness about the plight of IDF Corporal Gilad Shalit was a major success. It became the second most popular trending topic for the day of August 27.

The 24-hour long campaign, which officially began on August 26, involved thousands of Twitter users using the hashtag "#GiladShalit" in all of their posts. Yesterday, every minute, up to (and sometimes more than) a hundred posts using the hashtag "#GiladShalit" were made. Many users posted more frequently than usual, in order to contribute more to the campaign.
However, it remains to be seen whether the Israeli government will become more serious about bringing Gilad Shalit home unscathed; and ultimately, only a strong uncompromising show of force will be successful in accomplishing this goal.
